HISTORY
Simply Sports was founded in Beckenham, Kent in 1986 at the height of the eighties boom when there was no noticeable difference between sports function and sports fashion. The technical advances in footwear and clothing were yet to take root and the sporting public quickly adopted anything new. Such was our success that in 1989 the Reigate, Surrey store was opened with the range and quantity of stock continuing to grow, however the recession in the nineties hit Simply Sports like so many other retailers which curtailed any plans for further expansion. Hard work and the fantastic loyalty of our customers and suppliers took us through those difficult times and in 1997 we opened our third branch in Oxted, Surrey. As multiple retailers flexed their muscles and threatened to swallow all before them Simply Sports took a change of direction and turned our backs on sports fashion to concentrate on the function side of the trade. With the knowledge that online trading could have a considerable impact on buying attitudes Simply Sports started their web site in 1998. Along with a programme of staff training, new suppliers and the refitting of all three branches the business blossomed and continues to carve out a unique position in the sports trade. We are members of a trade association, Allied Partners Ltd. This company has some 34 members with about 60 retail outlets. In conjunction with our associates we meet regularly to discuss mutual matters of interest and also have trade shows during the year where sports goods manufacturers are invited to show off their forthcoming new lines. In that we are able to complement the International shows held both in the UK and on the continent
We hope that we shall continue to improve in all areas, we are certainly re-investing in the business to ensure that you, our customers receive the very best the sport trade has to offer
STAFF TRAINING
Such is the nature of the world of sport that standards are forever being challenged and improvements strived for. Along with our trading partners and training partners our staff are continually updating and improving their knowledge of sporting goods, technologies and retailing. Some have recently taken their NVQ in market retailing!
Trading partners such as Asics provide an excellent service in product training, updating our staff on technical improvements and providing access to specialist biomechanical training days.
A visit to the Salix cricket bat manufacturers allowed staff to try their hand at making cricket bats. This gave the staff members an excellent opportunity to see the manufacturing process from the beginning to the end and fully appreciate the craftsmanship and skills required to produce the perfect bat.
Visits from many companies allow the staff, old and new to brush up their knowledge and learn the latest developments in design and manufacture.

TECHNOLOGY AND DESIGN
While many new ideas are like reinventing the wheel many of the new advances in the sports industry owe their emergence to the space and military programmes. For example products such as Kevlar developed for protection for the military is now incorporated into tennis rackets, hockey sticks, badminton rackets etcetera. At Simply Sports we are continually looking for new designs and improvements often months ahead of the product launches and travelling to shows where companies unveil their latest ideas. The Managing Director has travelled extensively, for example to China where in company with a trade mission saw how many of the goods that are now imported from that country are manufactured. Also trade shows both here in the UK at Birmingham and Munich in Germany where one of the leading shows for sports goods, ISPO is held twice a year. Not only with these International shows but with our association with Allied Partners Ltd we run trade shows every three months where leading manufacturers come to show us their latest styles. Not all products are chosen, some are just too expensive, some just pie in the sky! But all are examined to make sure that our customers do not miss out.

ENVIRONMENT
We cannot step out of our front door these days without having to think about our carbon footprint and the pressures on Simply Sports are just as great. In fact for sometime now we have been enjoying our opportunity to do our bit for the environment. We recycle all our cardboard, believe me we are sent mountains of it, all our plastic bottles and where possible our paper. As new lighting technology becomes available we are changing to energy efficient light bulbs. Our lone voice is not yet powerful enough to persuade our suppliers to cut down on the amount of packaging but our purchasing decisions are influenced by how our suppliers package their goods. Plastic bags are very much in the news now and we are examining alternatives.

COMMUNITY
We are very conscious of our place in the community and in that respect have in place some sponsorship arrangements. We sponsor Old Reigations Rugby Club, Kenley Hockey Club and Merstham Cricket Club
REWARD CARD
We have recently introduced a Reward Card scheme whereby regular customers who join the scheme are able, on presentation of the card will receive a voucher giving a 5% discount on their purchases. These vouchers are sent direct to the customer’s home address and they can then present them for credit against subsequent purchases. Every three to four month’s customers are informed of special offers that are only applicable to them. These offers are usually directed to “The back to school” period or Christmas and the goods available are relevant to that period of time.
