The history and origins of the game of snooker are generally regarded as being in the latter half of the 19th. Century. Billiards had been popular in India amongst British Army officers, but one version devised in the officers mess in Jabalpur during 1874 was to add coloured balls in addition to the reds and black which were used for pyramid and life pool. The word snooker also has military origins being a slang term for first year cadets.
Snooker is a cue sport that is played on a large baize covered table with pockets in each of the four corners and in the middle of each of the long side cushions. A regulation full size table is 3.6m x 1.8m. It is played using a cue, one white ball, the cue ball, 15 red balls, worth one point each, and 6 balls of different colours worth 2 – 7 points each.
Pool played on a smaller table is from the same stable and uses smaller numbered or coloured balls and cues that have different characteristics to snooker or billiard cues,
